Abstract

The results of previous work on the characterization of local safflower cultivars require further investigation for a better understanding of this genetic heritage. The present study aims to highlight the relationship that can exist between characteristics of inflorescence (capitulum) and plant production according to plant branching degree (primary, secondary or tertiary).

The study focuses on four local cultivars of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) grown in the Oued Righ region located in southeast of Algeria.

The experimental design adopted is a complete randomized block with three replications. The results have been examined with variance and correlation analysis. Depending on the soil and climatic conditions of the study region, the results obtained demonstrate that the type of branching has a significant effect on plant production of the four local safflower cultivars. The capitulum resulting from secondary branching control the plant grain production, whose percentage by weight of plant production varies from 69.63% to 77.65% according to cultivars. Correlation analysis revealed various relationships of plant seed production according to branching types and those relating to primary and secondary branches predominate.
